From time to time I run across music that excites me enough to share it with folks that might happen across my corner of cyberspace…This mixtape definitely makes that list. Diggy Simmons, son of RunDMC’s Rev Run, has released his second mixtape, Airborne. This is not your typical 15 year old kid. You can hear the influences from Kanye, Lupe, Pharrell, his Dad, and folks that make great hip hop. His mixtape sounds…luxurious. There are themes, complete song structures, and not one song that I would consider ringtone material. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not perfect, but he’s definitely taking flight…Take a listen and tell me what you think:

iHeart Soulja Boy. This young business man is inspirational on so many levels. Regardless of what anyone says, he’s the reason your favorite rapper has taken his online presence seriously. I admire his hustle, if not his musical skills. That said, his music is for children. So save the critique of his lyrical style and realize that if you’re not in high school, you’re not his target audience. Enjoy!

DJ Drama & DJ Skee team up with the true King of R&B, R. Kelly for this newest installment of the Gangsta Grills franchise. I really wanted to like this mixtape, but between the screaming of Drama and Lil John on every track and the abuse of Autotune, it was an uphill battle. I’m not a stan for Kells, but I do like his music. He’s too good of a singer to force himself out of tune. There were some pleasant surprises though. I loved his verse on Chopped & Screwed. If you’re a fan of 90′s Kells, you’ll know why. Take a listen and let me know what you think.

You might know Diz Gibran as part of the Diamond skate team. He has since gone all in on his music game and we can see the fine results in his newest mixtape, “Soon You’ll Understand”, presented by Crooks and Castles. He teams up with Moonshine to hit us with a classic offering. I love the feel…it has a Gangstar vibe. This is definitely grown folks hip hop. I’m feeling the lushness of the tracks.
